Sandia National Laboratories R&D Mechanical Engineer (Experienced) in Albuquerque, New Mexico

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Manage product definition (graphic drawings and specifications) for explosive components under development or in production

  • Support production qualification of explosive components

  • Contribute to production problem-solving efforts

  • Engage in process/production improvement activities

  • Work with external suppliers to produce development or Mark Quality product

  • Provide input to explosive component design, qualification, and surveillance activities.

    Required:

  • Bachelor's and Master's degree in mechanical engineering or related science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subject area or equivalent combination of experience/education

  • Ability to travel (occasional to frequent).

    Desired:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subject area (thesis option preferred)

  • Training in subject areas related to explosive components, including mechanical design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and shock physics

  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical information and decisions

  • Familiarity with formal problem-solving methods

  • Familiarity with the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) product realization process, including design, qualification, quantity production, and surveillance

  • Familiarity with explosive component technologies, materials, evaluation methods, and related hazards

  • Familiarity with relevant component production processes, including glass-to-metal sealing, machining, resistance welding, laser welding, plastic molding and encapsulation/potting

  • Active security clearance (DOE Q or DoD Top Secret preferred).

    Department Description:

Department 2557, Explosive Component Production Science and Technology, is responsible for explosive component production and planning, and preparation for acceptance activities. In addition, the department plays a key role in production analytics and in supplier capability assessment and development. The department manages building 905, including facilities operations planning (e.g. facility upgrades and maintenance), explosive materials coordination, and Maintenance of Capability funding. Overlapping all of these functions are the department's responsibility for managing the Classified Work Stations in 2550, technical communications, performance assurance, and planning activities associated with internal production capabilities.
