Job Description:

Under general supervision, the Mechanical Engineer Lead is responsible for the mechanical architecture, layout and packaging of power conversion equipment and other Navy based electronic systems. Given the system complexity, the associated responsibilities and assignments require the exercise of considerable initiative, planning, and independent judgment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate technical acuity which encompasses interpretation of specifications/requirements and resolution of complex design and analysis problems. This position will also demonstrate business acumen through the evaluation and integration of cost effective designs, and through project management to meet milestone, cost, and schedule objectives.

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews and interprets specifications and requirements of power conversion equipment to determine structural, thermal and safety critical characteristics/considerations for the mechanical designs.

  • Prepares material and labor cost estimates for proposed designs and proposals.

  • Works directly with all engineering supporting disciplines from concept through final product design and production.

  • Responsible for project budget/schedule adherence.

  • Will be responsible for all aspects of mechanical design. These efforts include electronic packaging, mechanical design, thermal analysis, structural analysis, noise analysis and tolerance analysis for new and updated products.

  • Coordinates and reviews the work of the program design team, provides direction for design details, and supports the preparation of mechanical drawings.

  • Supports the manufacturing build and qualification testing requirements, as needed.

  • Reviews and approves project documentation, change requests, etc. and ensures appropriate documentation on projects.

  • Interfaces with customers, vendors, and production to develop product requirements and solutions.

  • Responsible for maintaining Computer Aided Engineering/Design skills in support of the mechanical engineering and design functions.

  • Mentors junior to mid-senior level engineers and designers in the mechanical engineering department.

  • Able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance.


  • Bachelor's degree (BSME) from four-year College or university and minimum 9 years experience in providing mechanical engineering technical leadership on electromechanical programs. Or, Master’s Degree (MSME) and minimum of 7 years experience in providing mechanical engineering technical leadership on electromechanical programs.

  • Experience using 3-D CAD software tools in design function. Autodesk Inventor and/or Solidworks [preferred], or equivalent modeling software (solid modeler) experience.

  • Experience in military and/or commercial specifications and standards pertaining to design, testing, hardware, material, and processes.

  • Experience in material and hardware selection including welding, fabrication practices, and machining tolerances to complete a cost-effective design.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Knowledge of Navy/Military Specifications for environmental qualification testing.

  • Skilled in finite element analysis (FEA). Familiarity with ANSYS Workbench [preferred] or equivalent FEA software.

  • Working knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. Familiarity with ANSYS Icepak [preferred] or equivalent CFD software

  • Good communication skills, oral and written demonstrated through authorship of technical documentation and presentations to internal and external engineering teams.

  • Able to provide technical leadership to a mechanical project team.
