VMware Engineering Manager, Tanzu - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Dallas, Texas

Team Tanzu is looking for an engineering manager to lead their team and deliver solutions that will allow customers to easily build, run and manage their modern workloads across any cloud and from any device.

What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

Team Tanzu has a range of manager opportunities across Tanzu’s portfolio enabling customers to build, run and manage their modern applications across any cloud or datacenter. In any of these roles and areas, you will guide your team, coach your team members along their unique career path, and connect their passions and skills to deliver the customer and business outcomes for your area.

The customer and business needs vary slightly between the teams. Within Tanzu Build, your main challenge is making it easy for developers to deliver their modern applications to any environment. Within Tanzu Run, your primary challenge will be providing a best-in-class platform developers and operators to run modern Kubernetes workloads in any environment, from the public cloud to the datacenter and to the edge. For Tanzu Manage, you will empower operators, CIOs and CISOs to manage their fleet of Kubernetes clusters and workloads running across a wide range of environments .

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

You understand and clearly communicate your team’s charter to the team and to stakeholders, and each team member understands their role and responsibilities within that charter.

You establish a clear pattern of planning, executing and delivering against your team’s areas, in collaboration with product and other engineering teams.

You create career plans with each team member that captures where they are, where they want to go, and the tangible steps that will help them address any gaps in their current skills and experience.

Your team is healthy as determined by key metrics of engagement, retention, work/life balance, and delivery.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

As a leader in Engineering, you will:

  • Lead your area along with your peers in Engineering and Product Management.

  • Manage headcount, hiring, onboarding.

  • Help ensure your engineers have the direction needed to be successful

  • Coach engineers and sustainably grow individuals on your team.

  • Lead and orient a team of 4+ engineers to deliver the program objectives.

  • Work at a team level with product managers, engineers, and designers in figuring out what to work on next and how to prepare for future work.

  • Connect your team’s work to other parts of the product.

  • Bringing clarity where there is uncertainty, managing risk and continuously delivering value.

  • Defining experiments, measuring success metrics and using data to inform decisions.

This role’s location is flexible, within timezones across the continental US. This means it can be done anywhere with a strong internet connection and limited distractions.
