Indian Health Service Medical Support Assistant in Gallup, New Mexico
This position is located in the Division of Nursing Services, Inpatient - Perioperative Section, Gallup Indian Medical Center, Gallup, New Mexico. The incumbent is responsible for performing receptionist duties, record keeping and miscellaneous clerical support duties associated with patient care and treatment within the inpatient units. Reports to Supervisory Clinical Nurse or designee of the assigned unit.
Receives telephone calls and provides non-confidential information or directs calls to the appropriate party. Obtains medical records for appointment prior to patients arrival. Arranges for discharge transportation and or flights for transfers. Assists patients in contacting patient care services, such as Benefits Coordinator, Correspondence Clerk. Performs general and specialized typing using the Discharge, Admission and Transfer system, initiates requisition for maintenance; prepares reports on computer and typewriter, utilizing adequate format, punctuation, and spelling. Transports various specimens to the lab or pathology as needed. Performs general clerical duties which include assisting nursing staff in orientation of new staff, assembling patient charts, receives and reviews all incoming mail and distributes appropriately, participates in Quality Improvement activities as assigned and performs other assigned duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-04: One (1) year of general experience and/or two (2) years above high school.
GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level and/or four (4) years above high school. Examples of specialized Experience: Maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative, medical and personnel records, and all other pertinent information. Perform clerical duties related to procedures such as transfers and notifies the appropriate departments and staff of patient disposition. Receive phone calls and assess the patients need for routine, urgent, and emergent appointments with appropriate provider and clinic. Specialized Experience--Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
