The Rail Cycle Technician executes end to end, full cycle movements of railcars as aligned to specific fleets and businesses within the operational window. The rail cycle components consist of ship site, outbound, at destination, inbound, maintenance and storage. This is done through close monitoring and adjustment of fleet performance utilizing rail visibility, metrics, work processes and other tools. The Rail Cycle Technician will work closely with the Rail Logistics Team (Fleet, Maintenance, Visibility and Service), Site Operations and Dow Businesses to drive logistics excellence.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Execution of the Rail Cycle Movement (At Destination, Ship Site, Maintenance, In/Out bound) within established parameters while pursuing opportunities to improve asset utilization by reducing cycle time.

  • Understand and work with fleet strategic manager and cycle specialist to progress Long Range Fleet plan. Collaborate on opportunities to improve fleet productivity including fleet sharing.

  • Resolve day to day operational issues while identifying and implementing improvement opportunities.

  • Understand and influence fleet cycle sensitivities such as business and railroad seasonality.

  • Ensure fleet equipment meets business requirements, product specifications, and Dow and government safety standards as defined by Fleet Reliability and Strategic Fleet Managers.

  • Ensure operational activities and process performance are aligned with rail and business goals including service and cost.

  • Work with the cycle specialist to understand and manage car empty queue to site target.

  • Influence the actionable parties to generate needed results.

  • Help prepare for and actively participate in business planning meetings with the businesses and key stakeholders.

  • Support and train Rail Asset Operations, Business and Site Logistics personnel in fleet management practices and processes as appropriate.

  • Collaborate with Rail Maintenance, Cycle Specialist and Business to complete required fleet maintenance on time and without impact to business operations.

  • Manage railcar shopping within software systems for all mini-shop shopping events.

  • Proactively identify and resolve potential delays in preparing cars for maintenance.

  • Maintain and utilize fleet performance metrics to meet departmental goals.

  • Respond to and resolve product quality or service incidents - customer or internal.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to apply software applications to respond to requests with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • This position requires the ability to build strong working relationships with diverse groups. The job duties are diverse and require quick, accurate and consistent decision making.

  • Able to communicate and relate well with those internal and external to the company.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are needed.

  • Able to handle multiple priorities from multiple sources.

  • Must be an organized self-starter exhibiting good judgment and the flexibility to adapt to priority changes and demands.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 3 years of supply chain/logistics or related experience.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Rail Logistics experience

  • Associate’s degree/4+ years military experience
