The VMware Cloud infrastructure Business Group is seeking a Product Line Manager who loves working on complex problems and getting things done. You will lead the effort to define and shape the first generation of Data and Analytics tools and services to run on VMware Cloud Infrastructure.
You will have ownership and autonomy to think strategically and make decision driving significant impact to the business. You will lead building functionality that spans multiple product lines and handles different types of stakeholder and developer needs. You will get to work with an experienced team of brilliant (and fun) people in a dynamic environment. You will be participating in growing a new business that is revolutionizing the cloud computing world.
Activities include research and analysis of customer requirements; working collaboratively with engineering and UX using an Agile development model; working closely with a distributed team to define and build our SaaS Data and Analytics offering; and writing of white papers, blogs and building presentations.
This is a hands-on role with operational responsibilities and strong cross-functional leadership.
Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?
In your first 30 days, you will quickly come up to speed on our product portfolio (e.g., vSphere, VMware Cloud (VMC), vSAN, etc.) and gain a grasp on new technology concepts/initiatives in our pipeline. You’ll also start to get to know stakeholders and collaborators – critical to get your job done well.
By day 90, you are taking the lead in defining what a data and analytics services on VMware Cloud would look like, and continue to refine the concept.
After 180 days, you will start leading the development to bring the concept to products.
Then you’ll drive customer adoption, getting feedback from customers and stakeholders to continue to improve the product, while defining what’s next in the pipeline.
The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?
The essence of a product manager is to gather customer- and business requirements and translate them into a prioritized set of requirements for Engineering and other parts of the organization to use to deliver a solution to customers. Success is measured by the customer adoption of your solution
To achieve this, you will be regularly meeting with customers to understand their needs and pain points, as well as with colleagues across the company to understand their plans and how we can collaborate for customer success.
For your proposals to be understood and approved, excellent written- and verbal communication is essential, whether discussing with internal colleagues, up the management chain, or discussing with customers for feedback and validation.
Your key duties and responsibilities:
Define requirements across product, analytics, engineering, and native apps to craft a suite of data tools and services
Drive the strategy and roadmap for data and analytics products
Conduct Market sizing and analyze growth opportunities
Managing the deliverable/milestones and associated work for executives, ensuring cross functional alignment prior to C-level reviews
Assess value, develop cases, and prioritize stories, epics and themes to ensure work focuses on those with maximum value that are aligned with product strategy
Provide backlog management, iteration planning, and elaboration of the user stories
Provide an active role in mitigating impediments impacting successful team completion of Release/Sprint Goals
Uncover the needs of internal customer groups—including product teams, and business and operations teams—and couple them with intuitive and actionable data solutions.
Emphasize the value of data/analytics and help drive a data-informed culture. Tell compelling stories with data because numbers are only as good as the way in which they are presented.
Work in cross functional Agile teams combining Development, UX, customer success, support, finance, sales, and marketing to deliver product to market
Act as a focal point of escalation for the field of any sales, delivery operations to identify at earlier stage and reduce risk
Partner with senior leaders across functional teams to drive day-to-day operations and help determine GTM strategy
Identify key metrics and build executive-facing dashboards to track progress and drive improvements of solution.
Key Qualifications and Requirements
Previous working experience as a Product Manager for 5+ years
Proven track record of growing new products or services into successful businesses, especially for enterprise products
In-depth knowledge of Agile process and principles
Sharp analytical and problem-solving skills
Creative thinker with a vision
Strong track record of shaping strategy for technical products or services
Exceptionally strong analytical skills and a natural predisposition toward data-driven decision-making.
Strong knowledge of modern web and application development concepts & technologies
Ability to handle several concurrent activities with attention to detail
Passionate about technology and have a strong drive to advance the state of IT
Ability to make reasoned decisions in ambiguous situations
Ability to influence people at all levels across a broad variety of job functions
MBA and BA/BS in Computer Science (or equivalents) preferred
Experience in SaaS delivery
Proficient in SQL and modern analytics tools (Mode Analytics, Tableau, Looker)
Working understanding of modern API (REST/JSON/OAuth) and UX (Responsive) concepts

The hiring manager for this role is Darren Pham, Director of Product Management - Analytics. Darren has been with VMware for 8 years. This team sits within a larger PM team that is responsible for Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, FedRamp, Compliance, and some other related offering.

Flexible: The location of this role is flexible within the United States. Work could be done from our Palo Alto, CA office some days during a week and other days from a non-VMware location.
